A new Police Outpost was formally inaugurated on August 6 at Ungma village, Mokokchung district, along the Mokokchung–Kohima highway, between Alichen and Lumami junction. The outpost is expected to serve as a key law enforcement hub in a stretch of road increasingly vulnerable to crime, traffic accidents, and illicit activities.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Superintendent of Police (SP) Mokokchung described the outpost as a long-felt need and a step toward making policing more accessible and responsive in the region. “In the last three years alone, 21 criminal cases were registered in this jurisdiction, leading to the arrest of 85 individuals involved in serious offences such as extortion, illicit drug trafficking, smuggling of prohibited liquor, and road accidents,” he said.

In an exclusive conversation with MT, the SP highlighted the challenges that necessitated the establishment of the outpost. “PS-II is a bit far from those people to come and lodge complaints,” he said.

“Also, these days, there are lots of traffic accidents and in cases of hit and run, it becomes difficult for people to get the right help from the police because PS-II is a bit far off,” he said.

He further added that since this is a border area between Mokokchung and Zunheboto, there have also been cases of drug trafficking and some liquor smuggling. “Some kidnappings were there even this year… With police presence, all such activities can act as a deterrent,” he added.

During the function, the SP officially dedicated the outpost with the words: “In the name of Almighty and on behalf of the Police Department, I hereby dedicate and inaugurate the Police Outpost Ungma for the service of the people of Mokokchung on this day, 6th August 2025.”

He stressed that the establishment of the outpost reflects the department’s commitment to ensuring safety, enhancing access to justice, and strengthening community cooperation. “This outpost is not merely a symbol of authority, but a house of service,” the SP said. “Every officer posted here carries the sacred duty to protect the rights and dignity of every citizen, to act with fairness and empathy, and to be a source of assurance in times of need.”

The SP also called on local communities, particularly the village councils of Ungma, Settsu, Aolijen, Mangmetong, and Longkhum, to support the initiative and make the outpost a model police station. “The role of police cannot be effective in isolation… Together, we must ensure that law and order is not just maintained but nurtured as a shared responsibility,” he said.

The establishment of the outpost was made possible with the support of the Government, Police Headquarters, District Administration, and local village councils. Special thanks were extended to Sharingain Longkümer, Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, for facilitating government approval and providing the land and building required for the project.

With the opening of this outpost, the police hope to improve emergency response times, enable more effective patrolling, and ensure tighter surveillance of crime-prone areas in the region.
