The Sevic Senior Citizens Home in Wokha was virtually inaugurated by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, from New Delhi on Thursday, as part of a nationwide initiative to strengthen elderly care infrastructure. The simultaneous inauguration covered facilities in five states — Nagaland, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand — and was organised by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.

As part of the programme, President Murmu also launched the Senior Citizen Welfare Portal, which aims to enhance accessibility to welfare schemes and support systems for the elderly population. Through this virtual event, five old age homes were inaugurated remotely by the President, underscoring the Centre’s commitment to improving care services for senior citizens across India.

A key moment during the programme was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Brahma Kumaris. This partnership seeks to promote joint efforts in senior citizen welfare, focusing on areas such as well-being, moral support, and social engagement.

In another significant welfare initiative, President Murmu distributed Assisted Living Devices to elderly individuals under the Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana. These aids are expected to make a meaningful difference in the lives of senior citizens by improving mobility and facilitating daily activities.

The virtual event featured a pledge-taking ceremony and an address by Dr Virendra Kumar of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, reaffirming the government’s commitment to inclusive development. “The virtual inauguration of Sevic Senior Citizens Home in Wokha stands as a significant milestone in elderly care and social welfare,” a report from the DIPR stated.
