Project Constitutional Justice stands in solidarity with Sao Chang government college students’ demand for proper transportation, high quality roads and an appointment of a well qualified full time principal.

Students of Sao Chang Government College (SCC) in Tuensang demonstrated their unwavering commitment to their education and the betterment of their community by staging a silent protest at the Clock Tower junction in Tuensang town on August 31.

The protest brought together students from all walks of life who united under one demand: “proper and good roads as well as good quality, functional Buses for transportation and an appointment of a well-qualified Principal (being the oldest college in Nagaland, Sao Chang College has been running without a Principal for years).”

Officials from Project Constitutional Justice (PCJ) and the Sao Chang College Student Union have been in close contact to better understand the students’ concerns and needs.

In a show of solidarity with these young activists, PCJ has decided to provide legal consultancy and technical support to the initiative of the Sao Chang Government College Students’ Union.

The issue raised by the SCC students extends beyond just the availability of buses and roads. It underscores a fundamental problem – the gross failure of the government and its governance.

The right to education, which is enshrined as a fundamental right in our Constitution, includes the right to safe and accessible transportation, especially for students residing in remote areas. The lack of proper roads and transportation infrastructure not only hampers their access to education but also endangers their safety.

Furthermore, prolonged absence of principal, spanning more than two to three years,-as informed to PCJ by Chongshenmongba, General Secretary of SCC students Union, Project Constitutional Justice believes, amounts to a gross negligence exhibited by the Government of Nagaland.

PCJ firmly believes that a functional government should be responsive to the basic needs of its citizens, particularly when it comes to education.

The determination displayed by SCC students is a testament to their resilience and their commitment to creating a brighter future for themselves and their community.

PCJ stands with the students of Sao Chang Government College and their demand for proper transportation, roads and an appointment of full time Principal.

We believe that their peaceful protest represents the constitutional, democratic spirit of our nation, where citizens have the right to voice their concerns and seek solutions from their government.

We call upon the government and relevant authorities to take immediate action to address the students’ demands and ensure the provision of safe and reliable transportation, high quality road infrastructure and also take necessary steps on war footing to appoint a well-qualified, full time Principal in the Sao Chang College.

The right to education is not an option but a fundamental right, and it is the duty of the government to uphold and protect this right. Project Constitutional Justice is committed to supporting initiatives that promote justice, equality, and the protection of Constitutional Rights. We will continue to work alongside the Sao Chang Government College Students’ Union and all concerned parties to advocate for the fulfillment of these rights.
