As the Nagaland Governor prepares to convene a crucial meeting on 30 June to discuss the establishment of an Autonomous Council for the six Eastern districts of the state, new details have emerged regarding the proposed “Frontier Naga Territory.” Sources have revealed that the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO) has endorsed the name for the autonomous region.
According to reliable sources, the proposed Frontier Naga Territory would have a total of 49 seats in the Assembly. Of these, 40 members would be elected through voting, while the remaining 9 members would be nominated.
The Government of India has also agreed to bring 45 departments under the purview of a newly structured secretariat specifically designed for the Frontier Naga Territory. Moreover, an Additional Director General of Police will be exclusively appointed to oversee the security and law enforcement matters within the autonomous region. If established, the Frontier Naga Territory would possess independent financial, executive, and legislative powers, setting it apart from the rest of Nagaland.
However, it is important to note that sources within the ENPO have indicated that the people have already expressed their rejection of the concept of an “Autonomous Council.” Their primary demand has been for a “separate state,” and discussions are ongoing to address these concerns. As a result, none of the proposed deals have been finalized.
Chief Secretary J Alam also emphasized that the Government of India’s proposal would only be discussed on 30 June with all relevant stakeholders. The meeting will be attended by key officials, including the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Ministers, Speaker, Ministers, Members of Parliament, Chief Secretary, and other senior government officials.
In addition, the government has requested the presence of Advisors Noke Wangnao, K. Konngam Konyak, S. Keoshu Yimchunger, Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe, W. Chingang Konyak, Kiusumew Yimchunger, and Sethrongkyu, along with several Members of the Legislative Assembly.
The Members of Legislative Assembly expected to attend the meeting include A Nyamnyei Konyak; Naiba Konyak; C Kipilli Sangtam; P Longon; Jwenga Seb; Y Mankhao Konyak; B Bangtick Phom; A Pongshi Phom; Y Lima Onen Chang; Imtichoba; Benei M. Lamthiu, and C. Manpon Konyak.
Additionally, the President and three representatives from the Central Nagaland Tribes Council, Tenyimi Peoples’ Organization, and all the 12 Tribal Hohos and bodies have also been requested to attend the meeting.
