Uttar Pradesh strengthened their grip over Nagaland on the second day of their Ranji Trophy clash at Green Park, Kanpur, declaring their first innings at a formidable 535 for 6 before reducing the visitors to 77 for 4 at stumps.

Resuming from their overnight total of 301 for 1, Uttar Pradesh continued their dominance with opener Madhav Kaushik anchoring the innings with a superb 185 not out off 374 balls. He was well supported by wicketkeeper-batter Aryan Juyal, who added 140 before being caught by Ronit More off Imliwati Lemtur.

Though Nagaland captain Jonatha Rongsen triggered a brief collapse with a fine spell, claiming 4 wickets to dent the middle order, Kaushik held firm at one end. His resilience allowed number eight Shivam Mavi to launch a counterattack, scoring a blistering 101 not out from 87 balls, including several powerful strokes that shifted the momentum decisively back to the hosts. The pair added crucial runs before Uttar Pradesh declared at 535 for 6, leaving Nagaland with a mountain to climb.

In reply, Nagaland’s batting faltered early against the disciplined Uttar Pradesh attack. They were reeling at 77 for 4 when stumps were drawn. Opener Nzanthang departed cheaply for 2, while Sedezhalie (15), Hem Chetri (8) and Chetan Bist (7) also fell without making significant contributions.

By close of play, skipper Jonatha Rongsen, yet to open his account, was at the crease alongside Dega Nischal, who stood firm with a gritty 42 not out.

For Uttar Pradesh, Shivam Mavi continued his all-round heroics, taking 2 wickets, while Aaqib Khan claimed 1 to tighten the screws on Nagaland.

Earlier on Day 1, Uttar Pradesh had made an imposing start after electing to bat first. Openers Abhishek Goswami and Madhav Kaushik stitched together a solid century partnership, laying the platform for a big total.

With a lead of over 450 runs already in hand and Nagaland’s top order in disarray, Uttar Pradesh will look to press for an outright win when play resumes on Day 3, while the visitors face a daunting task to avoid a follow-on.
