Nagaland was on the receiving end of a historic Ranji Trophy innings on Monday as Mizoram batter Chinmay Sutar became only the second Indian to score a quadruple century in first-class cricket, finishing unbeaten on 400 against the hosts in a Plate Group match at Sovima.

The 29-year-old reached the landmark in the 155th over before Mizoram declared at 581 for nine. Playing only his second first-class match, Sutar surpassed Prithvi Shaw’s 379 to register the second-highest individual score in Ranji Trophy history.

Sutar’s innings is the 12th instance of a batter scoring 400 or more in a first-class innings. The only other Indian to achieve the feat was B. B. Nimbalkar, who scored an unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948-49. Nimbalkar’s effort remains the highest individual score in Ranji Trophy history.

Sutar was unbeaten on 392 at tea and reached 400 before Mizoram declared. He also shared an unbroken 189-run partnership for the 10th wicket with Lalrempunia Chhakchhuak, the third-highest last-wicket partnership in Ranji Trophy history. The record stands at 233, set by Ajay Sharma and Maninder Singh for Delhi against Mumbai in the 1991-92 season.

The innings was also a first in first-class cricket, with Sutar becoming the first batter to convert his maiden first-class century into a quadruple hundred. Bihar’s Sakibul Gani previously held the record for the highest maiden first-class century, scoring 341 against Mizoram in February 2022.

Sutar had made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mizoram in the previous match against Manipur, scoring 35 and 99 in a three-wicket defeat. He had earlier represented Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and impressed in the Mumbai T20 League, where he helped MSC Maratha Royals defend their title.

Nagaland’s bowlers shared the wickets in Mizoram’s innings, with Anil Gupta claiming three, Neizekho and Saurav Kumar taking two each, and Nagaho Chishi and Rongsen Jonathan picking up one apiece.

In Nagaland’s reply, Joshua Ozukum was unbeaten on 23 and Sedezhalie Rupero on 11 at stumps, while Aloto Sumi was dismissed for a duck, leg before wicket to Vanrotlinga.
