The Kuki Students’ Organisation, Delhi & NCR (KSOD&NCR) finds it necessary to respond to the allegation made by the North East Students’ Organization (NESO), as reported by The Mokokchung Times (dated 05/03/2025), concerning the actions of security forces in Manipur, which, if left unaddressed, has the potential to exacerbate misunderstandings. While we acknowledge NESO’s commitment to peace and stability in the Northeast, we find certain inconsistencies in its stance that requires clarification.
Clarification on Allegations Raised by SDSA
The claims made by the Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA), which NESO has referenced, have been refuted by multiple credible civil society organizations, including KSO Sadar Hills, the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU), and the Kuki-Zo Council. These organizations have provided factual clarity, asserting that the allegations are unfounded and risk escalating tensions rather than fostering peace. It is crucial that all parties thoroughly verify information before amplifying claims that may contribute to discord.
Concerns Over Selective Outrage
NESO’s recent statement reflects a selective approach in addressing concerns, which undermines the credibility of its advocacy. Historically, security forces in the region have faced accusations of involvement in various activities, including providing security cover to insurgent groups such as the Th. Muivah-led NSCN-IM. For instance, the Assam Rifles has been accused of facilitating the movement of NSCN-IM cadres, yet NESO has remained conspicuously silent on such matters. This inconsistency raises questions about NESO’s impartiality and its commitment to justice for all communities.
NESO’s Silence on the Plight of Kuki Students
NESO’s claim of representing student interests across the Northeast is undermined by its silence on the violence and discrimination faced by Kuki students. There have been well-documented instances of targeted attacks on Kuki students in educational institutions, including Manipur University, where hostel facilities were raided, forcing students to flee for safety. Many Kuki students have been compelled to abandon their studies, and some have even lost irreplaceable educational certificates due to the conflict. NESO’s failure to address these critical issues raises serious concerns about its commitment to inclusivity and equal representation.
A Call for Impartiality and Constructive Dialogue
At a time when Manipur is grappling with a complex and sensitive crisis, we urge NESO to adopt a balanced, fact-based, and impartial approach. Advocacy should not be driven by selective interests but by a genuine commitment to truth and justice for all communities. Instead of amplifying narratives that deepen divisions, we encourage NESO to engage in meaningful dialogue and contribute to fostering unity, peace, and long-term stability in the region.
Conclusion
It is disheartening to observe that NESO appears to be influenced by individuals with anti-Kuki sentiments for their own political agendas. Such manipulation of a student organization for nefarious purposes is unacceptable and must not be repeated in the future. We urge NESO to adopt a holistic and unbiased approach, addressing all concerns without selective outrage. Only through genuine neutrality and a commitment to truth can we hope to foster lasting peace and unity in our region. As an influential student organization, NESO holds the responsibility to ensure fairness in its advocacy. We sincerely hope that it will reflect on its stance and take a more inclusive and unbiased approach in addressing the ongoing challenges in Manipur.
