Nagaland will join the rest of the world in observing Remembrance Day on November 11, 2025, to honour and remember the immense sacrifices of British and Commonwealth servicemen and women during the World Wars and all subsequent conflicts across the world. The observance, initiated by the State Government of Nagaland in collaboration with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), serves as a solemn reminder of the human cost of conflict and encourages a collective commitment to peace.
Remembrance Day stands as a poignant tribute to those who died or suffered in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. It provides an occasion to reflect on the courage and sacrifices made by countless individuals in defence of freedom and peace.
A release from the Home Department stated that the first formal observance of Remembrance Day in Nagaland, held last year, was a significant occasion that witnessed the presence and partnership of the United Kingdom, represented by the British Deputy High Commissioner. The event further strengthened the growing ties between the people of Nagaland and the United Kingdom. Following its success, the annual commemoration has now become an important part of the State Government’s official calendar, providing a befitting honour to those who laid down their lives during the Battle of Kohima—one of the most decisive battles of World War II—and reaffirming Kohima’s enduring significance in world history.
This year’s commemorative programme will take place on the morning of November 11, 2025, at the Kohima War Cemetery, with the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Dr Neiphiu Rio, as the Special Guest, and Bhaarat Dave, Deputy Head of Mission, British Deputy High Commission, Kolkata, as the Honoured Guest. The event will be attended by dignitaries including representatives from the Embassies of the United Kingdom and Ireland, legislators, senior government officials, personnel from the Army and Police, war veterans, and other distinguished invitees. The programme will also feature display stalls of books on the Battle of Kohima, flower stalls, and musical performances, along with the flagging off of a Vintage Cars Rally by the Flatbenders Club.
As part of the day-long commemoration, an evening programme will be held at the Banquet Hall, Hotel Vivor, Kohima, from 5:00 PM onwards, featuring a special conversation on ”The Battle of Kohima: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow.” The discussion will feature Abu Metha, Advisor to the Chief Minister, and Mmhonlumo Kikon, politician, poet, and author. The event will also include an evening of music and dinner, bringing together dignitaries, scholars, academicians, writers, members of the media fraternity, and others from diverse fields.
