The Rengma Selo Zi (RSZ), the apex youth organization of the Rengma Nagas, has issued a stern ultimatum to the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, demanding immediate action against the perpetrators of a brutal assault on three innocent youths on December 17, 2024. The incident, reportedly involving individuals claiming to be Naga National Workers, has sparked outrage within the community.

In a strongly worded statement, the RSZ condemned the assault as “disturbing and unacceptable,” particularly at a time when the Naga people are striving for peace and a resolution to the long-pending Naga political issue. “Of the three victims, two are from the Rengma community—both brothers, one of whom is a student and a bonafide member of the Rengma Selo Zi,” the RSZ stated. The brothers were reportedly targeted and assaulted while helping a friend and his colleague, who were initially detained by the perpetrators.

The RSZ emphasized that “such heinous acts cannot and will not be tolerated by the Rengma Selo Zi or the Naga people.” The organization outlined several demands directed at the district administration, including the need to hold the group responsible for the attack accountable. It also called for the immediate booking of the culprits under the law and the initiation of appropriate punishment for their criminal actions.

Additionally, the RSZ demanded that the perpetrators be apprehended within three days of the letter’s issuance. The group also called for a public apology from the responsible party to the entire Naga people for their anti-national actions, with the apology to be made in a public forum.

The youth organization also urged the district administration to treat the matter with “utmost urgency and seriousness,” stressing the importance of safeguarding the safety and dignity of every citizen. “Especially when groups misuse the guise of national service to perpetrate crimes against innocent individuals,” the RSZ stated.

The Rengma Selo Zi reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights and well-being of the Rengma people, stating, “We hope the government will fulfill its duty to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law.”

The Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) also strongly condemned the assault on four youths, calling it an “appalling act of violence” that is “not only unjust but also deeply antithetical to the ideals of justice, unity, and humanity championed by genuine freedom fighters.” The group emphasized that the principles of freedom fighters are rooted in the fight for “equality, dignity, and the protection of human rights” and that acts of aggression like the assault undermine these principles, sowing division, particularly among the youth, who are “the future custodians of our nation.”

The WSYF described the confrontation as a disturbing and unacceptable act, stating, “These four individuals, including students, were confronted by a group known to operate in the shadows, perpetrating violence and instilling fear in our society.” The youth group condemned the violence in the “strongest possible terms,” highlighting a disturbing trend of “disregard for youth safety and community values.”

The WSYF urged members of the group responsible for the assault to reflect on the values of those they claim to represent, reminding them that “freedom fighters stood against oppression and violence” and that actions contrary to these principles “betray their legacy and tarnish their honorable struggle.”

In addition, the WSYF called upon law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the perpetrators are held accountable. “Justice must be served swiftly to restore trust and deter such incidents in the future,” the group emphasized.
