Reports of exploratory activity linked to Vedanta have emerged from parts of the Tzurangkong area under Mokokchung district, beyond Chungtiayimsen and Vikuto villages, with claims that machinery has been present in Akahuto village since 2025.
According to a local source from the area, exploratory or preliminary assessment activities are understood to be underway to examine the presence of oil deposits. The source said the activity is part of testing and survey-related operations. However, there has been no official confirmation from the company or authorities regarding the nature or approval of such activities.
The Tzurangkong range, located along the Assam–Nagaland border, falls within the ancestral land of the Ao Naga community in Mokokchung district.
It may be recalled that in 2025, the Tzürangkong Senso Senden had strongly opposed attempts to allot the area for oil exploration and drilling by Vedanta, stating that such actions were being carried out “without our knowledge and consent.”
At present, there has been no official statement confirming whether the organisation’s position has changed or whether any formal agreement has been reached regarding access or exploration activities in the area.
