417 new members joined the Nagaland Congress today in Peren District, led by Dr. Tumda Newme, former Independent candidate from Tening Assembly and founding member of Peren Division NDPP. The party says this marks the start of a larger wave of public support ahead of the 2028 state elections.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Newme criticized the current government as a “showmanship party” focused on flaunting wealth while ordinary citizens suffer. “The rich are getting richer and the poor are suffering, and it is very sad to see the situation,” he said, adding that he joined Congress to stand with the people and promote inclusive development.

NPCC President and Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir welcomed the new members, highlighting the historic convergence of all three former Tening candidates under the Congress banner. He urged voters to reject money politics and support leaders who can bring genuine development.

Working President Khriedi criticized the BJP and its allies for manipulating democratic institutions, including the Election Commission, to maintain power, calling it a threat to the foundations of democracy.

The event, organized by the Peren District Congress Committee at Dr Newme’s residence, was also attended by senior leaders including Rosy Thomson, In-Charge Peren District & General Secretary NPCC, and other functionaries.

The NPCC said the mass joining reflects growing public support for a people-centric political alternative and marks a key step in strengthening the party’s base in Peren.
