The Rising People’s Party (RPP) has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the amendments made by the Nagaland State Government that have reportedly paralyzed the functioning of the Lokayukta. The Lokayukta, which serves as the sole anti-corruption authority in Nagaland, is responsible for investigating and addressing complaints of corruption and misconduct involving public servants, including government officials and elected representatives.

However, the RPP contends that recent amendments to the Lokayukta law are in violation of the Principal Act of 2013, undermining the institution’s purpose and effectiveness. “Marred by several complications, the amendments made by the Nagaland State Government are in contravention with the Principal Act of 2013. It has defeated the purpose of the Lok Ayukta,” a statement from the RPP read. The party further emphasized that unless these amendments are revoked, the Lokayukta cannot fulfill its intended role of fighting corruption in the state.

The PIL was filed by Lhikhro Kreo, a representative of the RPP, and the court has granted an interim stay on the implementation of these amendments for four weeks, pending further hearings.

“We extend our thanks to Advocate S. Borgohain and the legal team for their diligent efforts. The court’s timely intervention ensures the protection of public interest and the preservation of an independent and effective Lokayukta in Nagaland,” the RPP stated.
