The Sangtam Students’ Union Dimapur has issued a strong appeal to local and state authorities regarding the dire condition of roads in and around Dimapur. In a recent statement, the union highlighted the critical need for road maintenance, emphasizing that “the most basic thing a government or the administration need to provide the citizens of a particular state or place are good roads.”
Despite acknowledging the government’s efforts in providing essential services such as clean water, electricity, education, and healthcare, the union expressed frustration over what they describe as the government’s “nugatory attitude” towards road conditions. They argue that the state’s apparent negligence undermines public confidence, particularly impacting students who rely heavily on road travel.
“Every citizen of Dimapur, particularly the students who make up a large portion of people who travel by road on a daily basis, are entitled to travel smoothly on good roads in any season and weather,” the union stated. They highlighted how the poor state of roads exacerbates personal and work-related stress, with significant indirect effects on mental health and overall quality of life.
The statement also drew attention to the importance of maintaining roads that pass through vital institutions such as educational establishments, hospitals, and churches. The union stressed that these institutions, which form part of daily routines, deserve well-maintained roads.
“The union is of the opinion that the government already collects indirect taxes through fuels and direct taxes such as parking fees. Thus, the funds required to repair and maintain roads, as well as drainage and footpaths, must be utilized with all seriousness,” the union emphasized.
Highlighting the broader impact of good roads, the union referenced an analysis by IIT Roorkee and the CSIR-Central Road Research Institute, which found that well-maintained roads could lead to significant fuel savings and improved efficiency. Bhavesh Jain from IIT Roorkee noted, “On a 5km stretch, better road conditions can save up to 640 litres of fuel per vehicle over 15 years,” underscoring the economic benefits of road maintenance.
In light of these factors, the Sangtam Students’ Union urged the district authorities and the state government to prioritize road repairs to ensure a clean, safe, and progressive Dimapur.
