Mokokchung, September 3 (MTNews): Sangtam Union Mokokchung Town celebrated the Mungmung festival on Saturday, September 3 at the Multi Sports Complex, Mokokchung.
Speaking on the significance of the festival, Dr. Lihase Sangtam of Nagaland University said that the Mungmung festival was observed from September 1 through 6, during which folk dances, songs, and other traditional activities were performed. He said that the event was a time for forgiving, extending kindness, and fostering togetherness.
“The adoption of Christianity led to the abandonment of several ancient customs. However, by celebrating a festival like this one, we are able to practice the culture that God has given us,” he said. In addition, he said, it aids in bringing people from many tribes together, strengthening their kinship. He continued by saying that “we ought to keep up with these customs so that we may learn from one another and deepen our bonds”.
Various other cultural items including folk song, traditional fire craft, folk dance and display of top spinning were performed by the Sangtam Community members. The program was followed by Mungmung feast.
Earlier, Sangtam Union Mokokchung Town President, Rajet delivered the welcome address while Longdiba Sangtam, SDO(Civil) Mokokchung; Yangsümong, President ENPU Mokokchung; and Chubawati Longchar, President, Ao Senden also spoke on the occasion.
