Mokokchung-based folk fusion band Sariwar has drawn widespread acclaim for its debut self-titled single  “Sariwar,” which premiered on November 1 and quickly crossed 25,000 views on YouTube.

Listeners and musicians alike have praised the song’s seamless fusion of Naga traditional elements with rock and metal influences. Music director Enyar Jamir described it as “a world-class music production,” noting that it reminded him of the Mongolian rock band The Hu but with “our own language, culture, and music.”

Singer-songwriter  Nungshitula Pongener  called Sariwar “a beautifully crafted Ao Naga traditional song with powerful lyrics and strong cultural essence,” while Imna Yaden said he loved its “perfect mix of our roots and modern beats.”

Veteran musician  Moanungsang Ao, the first Naga Idol winner, said the song “brought the spirit of the Headhunter back to life,” commending its raw intensity and arrangement. “The vocal gets 110 for its power and commitment,” he remarked.

Reacting from Dimapur, Alem Alia Jamir of Tribes Music Studio called the track “very unique” and “so cinematic,” praising its vocal authenticity and creativity. Singer Lenen Jamir said the composition gave her “goosebumps,” adding, “I salute the composer and the music production for their incredible work.”

Listeners have echoed similar sentiments online. YouTube viewers also expressed similar enthusiasm. One wrote, “Amidst the wave of western influence, this stands tall — a timeless masterpiece that reminds us of our roots.” Another commented, ”Once again, Nagaland shows the depth of talent we have.”

With its blend of tradition and metal, Sariwar has opened a distinctive new chapter in Nagaland’s contemporary music scene, one rooted in identity, pride, and evolving sound. The band’s manager Senti Walling has said that their second piece is almost finished, hinting that it will be another Ao Naga composition. As one YouTube user put it, “Can’t wait to see what this talented team has in store for us in the future.”

The lyrics of Sariwar, written entirely in old Ao vocabulary by acclaimed writer T Senka Ao, breathe life into words rarely spoken today, preserving the linguistic roots of the community. Each line evokes imagery of ancestral pride and valor, echoing the oral traditions of warrior songs. By weaving this archaic language into a modern rock-metal framework, the band not only celebrates the richness of Naga heritage but also reimagines it for a new generation, proving that tradition can thrive in contemporary sound.
