The Southern Angami Youth Organization (SAYO) has issued an urgent press release expressing deep concern and frustration over the ongoing road construction and resurfacing work on the NH-29/NH-2 Kohima-Mao road.
According to SAYO, despite repeated requests and appeals, the NHIDCL (National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited) and various authorities have failed to address the deteriorating condition of the road, which has become a serious safety hazard.
SAYO President Metekhrielie Mejura and General Secretary Metevizo Sophie said that the organization is particularly concerned about the lack of accountability and transparency in the ongoing work. They claimed that the NHIDCL has not followed the DPR (Detailed Project Report) norms, and the work has been carried out randomly, without proper planning or supervision. This, they asserted, has led to the road’s dilapidation before the completion of the ongoing work.
Highlighting the importance of NH-29/NH-2 as a lifeline for the Southern Angami area and a catalyst for trade and commerce between Manipur and South East Asian countries, SAYO emphasized that despite its significance, the road has been neglected, and its condition is deplorable. They specifically pointed out the critical condition of the bridge between Viswema and Jakhama NH-2, stating it is on the verge of collapsing, posing a serious threat to human life, security, and vehicle movement.
Demanding immediate action from the authorities, SAYO urged NHIDCL and concerned parties to take immediate measures to repair and maintain the road and the bridge. It warned that failure to do so will result in a total prohibition of any vehicle movement within the National Highway. SAYO also said that it holds the NHIDCL, concerned authorities, and contractors responsible for any eventuality that may occur.
The organization requested authorities to treat the matter as urgent and prioritize it within 15 days of the publication. It appealed to the Governor of Nagaland, Chief Minister of Nagaland, and State Government authorities to exercise their authority and issue necessary directives against NHIDCL and the contractor.
SAYO hopes that urgent attention to this matter will bring about a swift resolution to the crisis and ensure the safety and well-being of citizens.
