Ex-ZUF member claims role in operation, cites civilian property damage

The National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM) has released a statement detailing a confession made by a “homecomer” and former member of the Zeliangrong United Front (Jenchui Group) concerning a recent operation against the NSCN. The disclosure suggests alleged involvement of Indian Security Forces in the attack at Kaiphundai village in Tamenglong district.

According to a statement issued by the MIP, NSCN/GPRN, Lance Corporal Mathiuchun Gangmei, son of Phenrong Gangmei of Rongdai village in Noney district, alleged that he was part of a 13-member team involved in an attack on an NSCN outpost.

In his statement, Gangmei claimed, “On 19th March, 2026, our team consisting of 13 cadres were picked up by the Indian Security Forces from the main gate of Khoupum and later dropped at Old Kaiphundai along the Imphal-Jiri Road to carry out an offensive attack on the outpost of the NSCN/ GPRN on March 20 at around 3–4 a.m.”

He further stated that the attack led to “serious collateral damages to residential properties” in Kaiphundai village and that the group withdrew after a brief exchange of gunfire due to a shortage of ammunition.

Gangmei also expressed regret over joining the ZUF, stating that he had initially joined “with the good intentions of serving the Naga Nation” but later realised it was the “wrong path.” He added that upon learning of what he described as plans to create “bloodshed among the Naga brotherhood,” he decided to leave the group.

He stated that he joined the NSCN /GPRN on April 6 “in good health and with a clear conscience” and expressed gratitude to the organisation for accepting him.
