The Seiyhama Students’ Union observed its third Union Day on Saturday at the Council Hall, Seiyhama Village, with Dr Metuo Liezietsu, Assistant Professor in the Department of Tenyidie, Nagaland University, Meriema Campus, as the speaker. Students, village leaders and community members attended the programme.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Liezietsu said education remains the most reliable pathway to the future. He described education as a continuous process that goes beyond classroom learning and includes workplace exposure, community involvement and life experiences. According to him, education plays a key role in developing critical thinking, improving livelihood opportunities, nurturing excellence and enabling individuals to respond effectively to real-life challenges.
Referring to the union’s motto, “Hard labour overcomes everything,” he said the present generation must rediscover the dignity of labour that sustained earlier generations. He added that education should help students reconnect with such values so that the motto is practised in daily life.
Dr Liezietsu also urged students to remain rooted in their identity by understanding their origins, traditions and cultural values, including principles of honest living. He noted that practices such as kenyü or genna existed even before the arrival of American missionaries in 1880, and said education, which came alongside Christianity, has since become central to society. Today, he added, education continues to be the main hope through which parents aspire to secure meaningful futures for their children.
Highlighting the importance of language, he stressed that the mother tongue is the fastest medium for learning and must be preserved and promoted alongside English. He also observed that career guidance introduced only at the Class 10 level is inadequate and should begin earlier to help students explore diverse career paths.
The programme was chaired by Menuoleü Zumu, Treasurer of the union. It included prayers, songs, addresses and reports by various office bearers. An award of excellence was presented to Neilhouzhalie Thernuo of GMS Seiyhama for securing a top position in the Primary School Leaving Certificate examination. The event also marked the introduction of the newly elected union team for the 2026 to 2028 tenure, followed by prayers and blessings.
