Shamator, 7 August (MTNews): The 3rd Millet Festival 2023 was successfully organized by the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) in collaboration with the Agriculture Department of Shamator. The event took place at the public ground in Shamator Town on 5 August.
During the festival, Toshila, the SEWA convenor, emphasized the significance of the Yimkhiung community celebrating the millet festival as the “first harvest crop of the year.” Wekoweu Tsuhah from the North East Network (NEN) highlighted the historical practice of millet harvesting by forefathers and the unique preservable quality of millet seeds. Tsuhah encouraged increased participation in millet cultivation alongside other crops. Special Guest L Mongsanger graced the occasion.
The District Agriculture Officer of Shamator expressed gratitude to SEWA Shamator for their collaborative effort with the department in organizing the event. He acknowledged the international recognition of 2023 as the International Year of Millets. The festival also included the distribution of millet grinding machines to beneficiaries, followed by a festive feast.
