The silence following Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio’s recent meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other Central leaders was flagged by Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) today . The meeting, intended to address the threat from NSCN (I-M) to return to its armed struggle, has left many in the state in an atmosphere of “deep concern and confusion,” according to the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC).

In a statement issued by the Communications Department of NPCC, the party expressed its disappointment with the lack of communication from the state government regarding the outcome of the meeting. “The conspicuous silence following Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio-led Cabinet delegation’s recent meeting… isn’t helping the cause, in terms of quelling the atmosphere of deep concern and confusion that have taken hold among the general populace in the state since then,” the NPCC said.

The statement went on to highlight the gravity of the situation, urging that the public should have been informed about the meeting’s outcome. “Considering the seriousness of the situation at hand, it was expected of the Hon’ble Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues to update the public on the outcome of the meeting,” the NPCC added.

The party raised concerns about the lack of reassurance from the government. “The fact that they chose not to come out with a positive message, reassuring the people that both the negotiating parties are doing their utmost to iron out their differences and maintain the spirit of the decades-long Naga Political Peace Process is extremely worrisome,” the statement continued. The NPCC warned that this silence could lead to the amplification of “possibly incorrect impressions among the people.”
