Awareness program on Persons with Disabilities held in Mokokchung

In an awareness program on Persons with Disabilities, the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Diethono Nakhro, highlighted the glaring neglect that the disability sector has endured for many years in Nagaland. Nakhro asserted that there is an urgent need for increased understanding and action to support the disabled community in the state.

The awareness program, organized by the District Administration and Mokokchung District Disabled Forum (MDDF), took place today at the DCs Conference Hall in Mokokchung.

Nakhro emphasized that while many people are familiar with the concept of disability, there is a lack of awareness about what needs to be done to address the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. She pointed out that even though there exist disability laws, programs, and schemes, there has been no implementation in the state. She urged everyone to acknowledge the truth that the disability sector has been severely neglected by all segments of society in the state.

Citing data from the World Health Organization (WHO), Nakhro revealed that globally, 16% of the population, approximately 1.3 billion people, are living with disabilities. This staggering figure indicates that one in every six individuals is affected by a disability.

While the official data for Nagaland from the 2011 census states that only 1.5% of the population, roughly 30000 people, are disabled, Nakhro expressed her belief that it is an underestimation and that the actual numbers are much higher, possibly closer to the global average of 16%.

The Commissioner maintained that the government has failed to adequately address disability issues, but she also underscored that the responsibility for the disabled community’s well-being extends to the entire society. Nakhro called on religious institutions, particularly the Church, and tribal bodies/civil society organizations to play a pivotal role in ensuring the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all aspects of life, including celebrations of various festivals.

While recognizing some progress in recent years and the strengthening of the disability movement with people speaking up for their rights, Nakhro cautioned that much ground still needs to be covered. She urged everyone to actively work towards integrating the disabled community into society, advocating that they require equal opportunities rather than pity.

The program saw short speeches from the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, a representative from the Ao Senden, and the District Welfare Officer, Mokokchung. A special song was presented by Akangmongba, adding a touch of sensitivity to the occasion.

During the second session, Arenlila Jamir, Project Associate from Caritas India, presented the Status of Persons with Disabilities, Formation, and Function of Disabled People’s Organizations (DPOs), leading to an interaction session.
