102 women elected in ULB polls mark major shift, says Kikon

A State-Level Seminar on “Women in Contemporary Naga Society” was held on 17 April 2026 at the SIRD Auditorium in Kohima. Organised by the Nagaland State Commission for Women with support from the National Commission for Women, the seminar aimed to promote dialogue, awareness, and inclusive development while addressing challenges faced by women in Naga society.

Speaking as special guest, Achumbemo Kikon delivered a strong message on the changing role of women. He said women were once unfairly viewed as a source of trouble, but today are widely recognised as a source of strength. He described this shift as a sign of social progress.

Kikon noted that Naga society has its roots in a patriarchal system, yet women have steadily asserted their rights and expanded their role in public life. He said women are increasingly contributing to decision-making, making institutions more representative and balanced.

Highlighting a key milestone, he pointed to the 2024 Urban Local Body elections, where 102 women candidates were elected. He called this a “paradigm shift” that reflects a modern outlook embracing women’s participation in governance.

He also praised Nagaland’s female literacy rate of 76.11 percent, describing it as an encouraging sign of advancement. Kikon stressed that progress requires support from both men and women, while urging women to uplift one another and allow the most capable voices to lead.

Encouraging women to keep striving for equality, he said they should now aim to meet international standards. He concluded with a quote by Diana Mariechild: “A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture, and transform.”

Chairperson, NSCW, W. Nginyeih Konyak delivered the keynote address and said the seminar was both timely and significant as Naga society stands at a crucial phase of transformation.

Highlighting the vital role of women, she stated that Naga women have long been the backbone of families and communities, contributing across social, cultural, and economic spheres. However, she noted that challenges persist in areas such as representation, decision-making, and access to opportunities.

She emphasised that women’s empowerment is essential for inclusive and progressive development, adding that when women are empowered, society as a whole prospers.

Reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to advocating women’s rights, she expressed hope that the seminar would lead to meaningful discussions, practical recommendations, and collective action towards a more equitable society.
