ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Cattle, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, and ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema, Nagaland, in collaboration with Dimapur District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd, Nagaland (Dimul), organized a state-level workshop on “Promotion of Scientific Cattle Production in Nagaland” on 25th June 2024 at ICAR-NRC on Mithun in Medziphema.
Gracing the program as the Chief Guest, Advisor for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Kazheto Kinimi, conveyed his gratitude to ICAR-NRC Mithun and opined that today’s workshop on the promotion of scientific cattle production in Nagaland is essential for discussion through scientific platforms. He highlighted the need for discussions on local cattle, which are low-yielding, and elite crossbreed cattle, which are expensive. He also emphasized the exploration of total mixed rations and the easing of cattle production management at the farmer level.
The Chief Guest cited all issues to be addressed. He also suggested the important issue of conserving Thutho cattle, the local indigenous breed available in the state. Specifically, he addressed his concern to the ADG (Animal Health) ICAR, New Delhi, regarding the frequent outbreaks of ASF (African Swine Fever) in Nagaland, which are causing economic losses. He urged the ADG to expedite the development of preventive measures for ASF to overcome this challenge.
In conclusion, he wished the workshop great success and hoped it would yield positive results. He expressed his belief that the platform organized by NRC Mithun would significantly contribute to transforming cattle production in Nagaland.
In the first technical session, Director of ICAR-CIRC Meerut, Dr. A.K. Mohanty, briefed on the role of cattle in food and nutritional security in India. Dr. Ashok Kumar, ADH (AH), ICAR, New Delhi, discussed common diseases of cattle and their control measures, while Dr. S.K. Verma, PS, ICAR-CIRC, Meerut, covered feeding practices for maximizing cattle production in North East India.
In the second technical session, advanced reproduction technologies for augmenting cattle productivity in the North Eastern Region were detailed by Dr. Suresh Kumar Dhoop Singh, Principal Scientist & Head, ICAR-CIRC Meerut. Rajeev Ranjan Kumar, Scientist, ICAR-CIRC, Meerut, discussed value addition technologies to enhance farmers’ income and promote entrepreneurship in the region.
A farmer-scientist interaction was also organized, where many farmers actively raised their problems in livestock management. Input materials were distributed to the farmers. Participants included farmers from various parts of Nagaland, representatives from the milk union of Nagaland, officials from the Department of Animal Husbandry of Nagaland, scientists and directors from ICAR, veterinarians, progressive farmers, service providers in the dairy sector, and various experts.
