The Nagaland State Seed Farm at Merapani has been operating without electricity since its establishment in 1969, a fact that drew sharp concern at the monthly meeting of the Sub-Divisional Planning and Development Board (SDPDB) held in Bhandari on Tuesday.

The meeting, chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) and SDPDB Vice Chairman Longasen Lotha, NCS, was convened at the Summer House-cum-Guest House Conference Hall, where members reviewed ongoing developmental challenges in the region.

Deputy Director of the Seed Farm, H. Lawrence, told the house that the lack of electricity has “hampered smooth and efficient functioning” of the farm, which plays a vital role in providing high-yielding and quality seeds for farmers across the state.

“Despite numerous challenges, the department is committed to production and has also carried out extensive awareness campaigns in recent weeks, targeting farm tenants and local groups,” Lawrence said. He appealed for peace in the area and requested stakeholders to approach competent authorities for grievances instead of taking the law into their own hands.

The SDPDB emphasized the need for law and order in the Seed Farm zone and called for identifying and reporting troublemakers to the nearest police stations in Bhandari and Merapani.

The house also praised the Electrical Department for its service despite constraints and appealed to the department’s higher authorities to provide a pool vehicle to support mobility in the geographically vast sub-division.
SDO (Civil) Ralan, Tsenthungo E. Ngullie, updated the board that the construction of the SDO (Civil) office at Ralan is progressing on schedule.

New members were welcomed to the board, and the Veterinary Department, Merapani, has been asked to present its departmental profile in the next sitting.
