The Sungkomen Premier League (SPL) will represent Mokokchung district in the ongoing 9th edition of Captain N Kenguruse (Mahavir Chakra) Memorial Football Tournament 2025 being held in Kohima.
According to Sumit Tamang, co-founder of SPL, a 22-member contingent comprising 19 players and three management staff left for Kohima on Monday morning. Out of the 19 players, 14 are from SPL while five are experienced recruits from outside the league. The squad will be captained by midfielder Aotoshi Ozukum.
“Every year, a club from each district is sent to the Captain Kengruse Memorial Trophy, so we are very happy that this year the MDFA gave us this opportunity,” said Tamang to MT.
On the team’s preparation, he said the players have been training for a month under Coach Lanunukshi and Manager Opangtemjen. The squad includes players as young as 14 and 15 years old, with the oldest aged 26, excluding the experienced recruits.
“It is our first major tournament… we are not expecting too much. We know the teams that are participating in the trophy. However, because we have at least five experienced players with us, we are confident that we will give our best and will get the result we want. At the same time, it will also be a great experience and a learning platform for our players,” Tamang said.
The SPL will play their opening match against Peren District Junior FC on October 29.
