During the ULB elections for MMC, six citizens from Sungratsü Village contested, out of which four candidates—three women and one man—won from their respective wards. The elected MMC Councilors from Süngratsü are Bendangkumba Aier (NDPP, Majakong Ward), Maongtula Longchar (NDPP, Alempang), Yongkongsangla R (Congress, Artang), and N Imtimenla Ao (Independent, Sungkomen).

M Taka Longchar, Sungratsü Village Council Chairman, highlighted the historical pride of Süngratsü villagers, who famously hunted 12 tigers in a single hunt during the 1970s. He emphasized that, in modern times, pride and honor are exhibited through elections and winning such battles.

In this context, he asserted, “We must celebrate, but not too much, for there is a great task and responsibility ahead of us to fulfill in their respective wards and towns during their five-year tenure.”

“Fulfill the aspirations of the people who have elected you to this position, strive to achieve the people’s vision and plans in your tenure while eyeing the coming elections,” he advised the elected councilors.

Lemasashi Ozukum, President of the All Ward Union Mokokchung, also exhorted the councilors to be thankful to the electorate for their mandate and trust. He advised them to respect the people’s mandates and never lose sight of their constituents while discharging their duties and responsibilities as councilors.

He further advised the councilors about potential contradictions they might face with landowners under the New Nagaland Municipal Act 2023 and recommended seeking advice from elders and experts while implementing those provisions.

On behalf of the elected councilors, Bendangkumba Aier expressed their utmost appreciation to the citizens of Süngratsü for their moral and physical support during the tense election period. He appealed to the citizens for their continuous support in their endeavors.

He also noted, “The Nagaland Municipal Act 2023 is a new Act that we have to experience and exercise; therefore, we need the people’s cooperation and support more than ever as we unfold the provisions under the new Act.”
