Dimapur, Tuensang cleanest cities in Nagaland

Nagaland has earned the 24th position out of 27 states in the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 in the ‘best-performing states’ category announced on Thursday. The Awards took place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi where the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, presented the accolades. The event was hosted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

Dimapur claimed the title of “Clean City within Nagaland” for municipalities with a population exceeding one lakh, while Tuensang secured the corresponding award for cities with a population below one lakh.

However, ten towns in Nagaland, including Aboi, Tizit, Noklak, Shamatore, Seyochung, Chiephobozou, Tening, Tobu, Longkhim, and Pungro, found themselves in the bottom among the 3,970 cities with populations below one lakh in the cleanest city category.

Indore and Surat were jointly declared the cleanest cities in India, with Indore clinching the title for the seventh consecutive year. Navi Mumbai retained its third position in the Central government’s annual cleanliness survey.

In the ‘best-performing states’ category, Maharashtra secured the top spot, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Odisha is ranked fourth, followed by Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Karnataka, Goa, Haryana and Bihar.

Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and other dignitaries attended the event alongside President Murmu. The top 10 cleanest cities with populations exceeding one lakh included Greater Visakhapatnam, Bhopal, Vijayawada, New Delhi, Tirupati, Greater Hyderabad, and Pune.

In the category of cities with populations below one lakh, Sasvad and Lonavala in Maharashtra, along with Patan in Chhattisgarh, secured the top three positions. The Mhow Cantonment Board in Madhya Pradesh earned the distinction of being recognized as the cleanest cantonment board.

Varanasi and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh received the top two awards for being the cleanest Ganga towns. Chandigarh was honored with the award for the Best Safaimitra Surakshit Sheher (safest city for sanitation workers). Twenty zonal awards were distributed among medium and small cities.

Madhyamgram, Kalyani and Haora – all cities from West Bengal – had the dubious distinction of being placed at the bottom, while the States at the end of the list were Rajasthan, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.

The theme of the cleanliness survey 2023 was “Waste to Wealth”, while for 2024 it is “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle”.

Swachh Survekshan, conducted by the union ministry (MoHUA) under the Swachh Bharat Urban Mission since 2016, is the world’s largest urban sanitation and cleanliness survey.
