The market demand for sweet corn is gaining momentum due to its juicy kernels and delightful taste. The crop not only provides a delicious addition to meals but also offers substantial economic benefits to farmers, making it paramount to popularize sweet corn cultivation among them. Hence, a demonstration program on the “Performance Trial on Sweet Corn” was conducted at Longpa village on February 15, 2025.
The resource person, C Amongla Jamir, BTM, Kobulong block, mentioned that the sweet corn variety used for the demonstration was “Sweet Heart,” known for its good ear tip filling, kernel row arrangement, and attractive bright yellow kernels.
She delved into various aspects of sweet corn cultivation practices, such as the required climatic and soil conditions, land preparation, and timely sowing to achieve optimal yield. She also highlighted the appropriate seasons for sowing, seed rate, and stressed the importance of maintaining the recommended spacing. The resource person emphasized key irrigation stages, as sweet corn requires consistent moisture throughout its growing period. In addition, farmers were informed about timely pest and disease management, along with intercultural operations and harvesting.
At the end of the session, sweet corn seeds were distributed to the farmers. A total of 10 farmers, along with ATMA staff, attended the demonstration program.
