Artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept. It is rapidly becoming the foundation of how the world works. Yet for many people, AI is still reduced to ChatGPT, image generators, or apps that create videos with a few clicks. That perception is far too narrow.

AI is transforming healthcare, agriculture, education, manufacturing, finance, transportation, scientific research, journalism, and public administration. It is helping doctors diagnose diseases, enabling farmers to predict crop conditions, assisting scientists in developing new medicines, and allowing businesses to make faster and more accurate decisions. The technology is quietly becoming part of everyday life, whether people realise it or not.

As AI becomes central to nearly every industry, many experts expect it to evolve into a discipline as distinct as medicine, law, or mechanical engineering. Universities across the world have already begun offering dedicated undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in AI. This is a clear indication that AI has fast become a foundational field of knowledge.

Therefore, if AI is becoming a core academic discipline, it must also become a core part of school education. The implications are clear. The real question is whether our education system is preparing students for the world they will inherit. The answer, unfortunately, is not yet. If universities are redesigning education around AI, schools cannot afford to continue teaching as though nothing has changed. They must begin equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven world.

Our schools must begin introducing AI education in a meaningful way. This does not mean every school needs expensive laboratories or sophisticated computing facilities. AI education can begin with the basics: understanding what AI is, how it works, where it is used, its ethical implications, and how to use AI tools responsibly and effectively. These are skills that can be taught alongside digital literacy.

We cannot prepare students for tomorrow with a curriculum designed for yesterday. Just as history, science and mathematics became essential pillars of school education, AI literacy must now become a core component of the curriculum. Our children will not simply compete with machines. They will compete with those who know AI better.

Ignoring AI education today risks creating a generation of “educated illiterates”, students who may excel in traditional examinations but lack the knowledge required for an AI-driven world. Geography should never determine opportunity. A student in Mokokchung deserves the same preparation for the future as one in Mumbai, Singapore, or London.
