The second semifinal match of the ongoing MDFA Trophy 2024 will be played between defending three-time champions Telongjem FC and Super Seniors FC on Monday at 1:00 pm, at Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung.
Telongjem FC are aiming for a record fourth consecutive title, a feat no other team has achieved since the MDFA Trophy was instituted in 1993. However, before becoming the first team to break that record and claim the most titles in tournament history, Telongjem FC must first overcome Super Seniors FC, and then defeat the tournament’s dark horse, the Konyak Students’ Union Mokokchung, who has already secured their place in the final.
The MDFA Trophy 2024 presents an interesting scenario: either a new champion will emerge, or a record-making winner will be crowned. If Telongjem FC wins the semifinal and goes on to lift the trophy, they will set a new record in the tournament’s history.
Conversely, if Super Seniors FC defeats the defending champions, the MDFA Trophy will be won by a new team. Both Super Seniors FC and KSUM have never won the trophy, and KSUM’s appearance in the final is especially remarkable, as this is only their second participation in the tournament.
Despite initial apprehensions, this year’s tournament is shaping up to be as exciting as any previous MDFA Trophy competitions.
Meanwhile, a ticket seller at one of the entry points expressed optimism for the final, stating, “The crowd response has been good, but there’s room for improvement. We’re confident a large number will turn out for the final.”
With many football fans and players eagerly anticipating the final, KSUM’s resilience will be tested as they aim to overcome either the reigning champions Telongjem FC or a strong Super Seniors FC side in their quest for their first MDFA title.
Astroturf Dream Come True?
Speaking to MT after the first semifinal match between Team Gilgal and KSUM on Saturday, MDFA President N. Akok Longkumer hinted at the likely completion of the astroturf at Rempukong, Ungma, in the near future. The foundation stone for the astroturf was laid in December 2022, and according to the MDFA President, it is highly probable that the next MDFA Trophy could be played there.
The completion of the astroturf is considered crucial for the future of football in Mokokchung. The current muddy, coarse and uneven fields not only disrupt the flow of play but also pose a significant risk of injury to players. The MDFA President also addressed the recent weather challenges, acknowledging the impact of rain and poor field conditions on the quality of play. “We are optimistic and plan to hold the next edition of the MDFA Trophy on the astroturf,” he shared with MT. He further assured that efforts would be made to improve field conditions before the final to ensure the best possible playing environment.
