Tensions escalated in the area between Aoyimti and Padumpukhuri on Monday evening, 14 October, between 7-8 pm, as a group of local youths attempted to march towards the NSCN-K (Niki) camp. The unrest stemmed from dissatisfaction with the NSCN-K (Niki) group’s response regarding the abduction of two bonafide members of the Dimapur Ao Youth Organization on October 10.
The interim Dimapur-based Naga youth organization had issued a 48-hour deadline on October 12 to the Chairman of the Cease Fire Supervisory Board, demanding action against those responsible for the abduction. With the deadline expiring on Monday, frustration boiled over, prompting the youths to take matters into their own hands. It was reported that the youths had been waiting at the Cease Fire Supervisory Board in Padumpukhuri throughout the entire day of October 14, awaiting a positive response.
Security forces and key leaders intervened, stopping the youths before they could reach the NSCN-K camp. Law enforcement, including the IRP and Dimapur Police, has since been deployed in the area to keep the situation under control. A temporary agreement has reportedly been reached, though specific details remain unclear. However, it was mentioned that the youths were promised proper follow-up actions.
Some leaders of the community also reportedly stepped in to calm the situation, working alongside police to prevent further escalation of the commotion. Their collective efforts have, for now, managed to contain the situation. Further developments are awaited as authorities continue to monitor the area.
Earlier in the day, Dimapur based interim tribal based body and Ceasefire Monitoring Group today held a meeting with the chairman of the CFMG at the Police Complex, Chumoukedima regarding the two individuals who were abducted on October 10. Talking to the media after the meeting, Ceasefire Monitoring Group/Ceasefire Supervisory Board (CFMG/CFSB), Lt. Gen. (Retired) Amarjeet Singh Bedi said that the NSCN-K (Niki) group has been found accountable of violations of ceasefire ground rules as well as misuse of the ceasefire office. He informed that the group has agreed in writing that they are ready to adhere to all the ground rules.
The Chairman also mentioned that the DGP Nagaland, who is also a member of the CFMG, has been instructed to apprehend the abductors and ensure they are brought to justice as soon as possible.
