The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Nagaland Department of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and the Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI), Jorhat, marks a major milestone in Nagaland’s pursuit of a structured agarwood economy. While the agreement may appear technical in nature, covering planting material, scientific cultivation, farmer training, processing and export management, its long-term implications could be far-reaching for the state’s rural economy.
Agarwood is not a new resource for Nagaland. The species is native to the state’s forests, including its upland areas, and has long been valued for its fragrant resin and international demand. This newspaper has consistently investigated and documented the sector’s untapped potential, the policy vacuum, and the need for scientific intervention. Over the years, commercial cultivation has expanded largely in the foothill regions, where favourable conditions and accessibility have encouraged plantation development. Among Nagaland’s districts, Mokokchung has emerged as the leading centre of agarwood cultivation, accounting for more than half of the state’s cultivated plantations.
The challenge before Nagaland has never been the absence of resources. The state has built a substantial plantation base, with millions of cultivated trees, yet the economic benefits have remained limited. The missing links have been scientific support, processing infrastructure, organised marketing, quality assessment and direct access to international markets.
For years, many growers have depended on traders from outside the state, particularly Assam, to sell their produce. This has meant that much of the value generated from Nagaland’s agarwood has accrued elsewhere. A tree that can command premium prices after proper processing and value addition often leaves the state as raw material, leaving farmers with a smaller share of the final economic benefit.
The RFRI partnership addresses some of these structural gaps. Scientific resource mapping, improved planting material, inoculation technology, farmer training and post-harvest management can help bring greater certainty to growers. Equally important is the development of local processing facilities so that Nagaland can move beyond being merely a supplier of raw agarwood.
However, commercial ambition must go hand in hand with ecological responsibility. Agarwood has the potential to support agroforestry and provide an alternative livelihood pathway as traditional jhum cultivation faces increasing challenges. But expansion should not come at the cost of natural forests or biodiversity. Scientific planning will be essential to ensure that cultivation complements conservation.
The state must also ensure that the benefits reach ordinary farmers who have invested time and land in growing agarwood. Policy implementation, transparent market mechanisms, farmer cooperatives and local entrepreneurship will determine whether agarwood becomes a transformative sector or another missed opportunity.
Nagaland’s agarwood story has reached a crucial stage. The state has the plantations, the natural advantage and now the institutional partnership. The next step is to build an ecosystem where science, industry and farmers work together.
The real opportunity before Nagaland is not simply to grow more agarwood, but to build an entire ecosystem around it, where research, policy, entrepreneurship and farmers together create enduring prosperity. If that vision is realised, the MoU signed this week may well be remembered as the moment when one of Nagaland’s most valuable natural assets began its journey towards becoming one of its greatest economic strengths.
