In our evolving society, various alien traditions have become ingrained in our celebrations. One such practice that warrants immediate attention is the bursting of firecrackers.
The environmental repercussions of firecrackers are indisputable and extensive. A primary concern lies in the air pollution resulting from the release of harmful substances like sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and particulate matter. These pollutants not only pose severe health risks, especially for individuals with respiratory conditions, but also significantly contribute to the deterioration of air quality.

Furthermore, the impact on birds, livestock, and wildlife cannot be ignored. The deafening noise generated by firecrackers disturbs and disorients them, affecting their behavior and causing undue stress with long-lasting consequences on their overall well-being.

In addition to environmental concerns, it is imperative to address the human cost of this tradition. Emergency rooms witness a surge in cases related to firecracker injuries each year. Burns, injuries to the eyes and hands, and even fatalities tragically occur during this period. Banning firecrackers would not only alleviate the burden on healthcare systems but also prevent countless families from enduring the heartache of accidents that are entirely avoidable.

Authorities in Mokokchung have consistently banned the import, sale, and bursting of firecrackers during the festive season. The appeal for a ‘Swachh Diwali Shubh Diwali’ to the Hindu community in Mokokchung has been well-received. However, as Christmas and New Year approach, it remains to be seen if the local community will reciprocate. Reports of unregulated firecracker use in villages last year indicate a need for broader enforcement.

Bursting firecrackers is not only an alien culture but also one that is not enviable, considering the pollution it causes and the health hazards it poses. As Diwali has passed with minimal disturbance, the question arises: will we have ‘Holy nights’ as Christmastime approaches?

The district administration, the Chamber of Commerce, and respective ward authorities have previously established rules banning firecrackers. Although no new orders have been issued this year, the existing rules remain in force as they have not been revoked. Therefore, defaulters must be penalized, as the enforcement of rules is essential to discourage lawbreakers.

As a society, it is crucial to reflect on our choices and their consequences. Advocating for the ban on firecrackers is not an attack on personal choices but a plea for responsible and sustainable celebrations. By reassessing our acquired (alien) customs and opting for alternatives that minimize harm to the environment and our fellow beings, we can ensure that our festivities are not overshadowed by the negative impacts of pollution and injury.
