The Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM), the apex student organization in Mokokchung, has called for urgent and coordinated action to counter illegal immigration in the state, particularly in Mokokchung district, in the wake of on going eviction drive against illegal immigrants carried out by the Assam government.
In the statement signed by Vice-President Onenpong and Assistant General Secretary Bangjungkaba, the AKM stated that the issue of illegal immigration in Northeast India is not new. As such, they said that the current developments in Assam should not have come as a surprise to neighboring states, including Nagaland.
“Rather, it would be shameful if the government and the people of Nagaland were caught off-guard in the aftermath of these drives,” AKM sai.
“The threat posed by illegal immigration is real, and AKM remains committed to preserving and safeguarding indigenous people against this existential threat,” the statement declared. It went on to highlight AKM’s longstanding campaign against illegal immigration, which has been active in Mokokchung since 2007 under the banner of the “Survival Mokokchung” movement.
While acknowledging the Nagaland government’s response to the Assam eviction drive, AKM expressed concern over the lack of concrete measures on the ground. The organization demanded that the Mokokchung district administration immediately seal its border with Assam to prevent a potential influx of illegal immigrants fleeing the eviction drive.
The AKM also warned that if any illegal immigrants are found within Mokokchung District, it will take immediate action, and the district administration will be held fully responsible for any resulting untoward incidents.
AKM also issued a broader call to the public, urging “all right-thinking citizens” to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting the identity, culture, land, and peoplehood of the indigenous people.
Further, the organization has directed all its range units to intensify surveillance and reinforce the ongoing campaign against illegal immigration.
The statement reflects growing tension in the region as state governments and civil society groups respond to demographic and political challenges posed by migration across porous borders in Northeast India.
