At least three players from Mokokchung have been named in the Nagaland senior cricket teams for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022-23 and the BCCI Senior Women’s T20 Trophy, both scheduled to begin from October 11 to be played simultaneously in Indore and Bangalore respectively. A veteran from Mokokchung has also been named as a member of the support staff.
Mokokchung’s Merenkaba Jamir was named in the Nagaland Senior Men’s squad for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022-23, the premier domestic T20 cricket championship organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) among the teams from the Ranji Trophy. The inaugural season of the trophy was played in 2006-07. After 9 new teams, including Nagaland, were included into the domestic structure in the 2018-19 season, the teams are drawn into five groups with group winners and runners up qualifying for the Super League. The 10 teams are divided into two groups and the group winners play the Final. Tamil Nadu are the reigning champions.
Nagaland Cricket Association (NCA) named a 15-member squad led by Hokaito Zhimomi as the captain for the premier T20 domestic tournament, which was earlier called Inter State T20 Championship.
NCA has also named a 15-member squad for the BCCI Women’s Senior T20 Trophy, the women’s equivalent of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The Nagaland women’s senior team is captained by Limatola Ao and features two players from Mokokchung – Merensola and Aleminla.
Further, Talikaba, a veteran from Mokokchung has also been named as the Team Manager and Assistant Coach of the senior women’s team.
