Victims were returning from a church program in Mokokchung
At least five persons were reportedly killed on the spot, all of them women, according to preliminary information, and several others injured in a tragic bus accident at 10th Mile along the Kohima–Dimapur road on Saturday, involving members of a church unit from Chümoukedima. The injured were rushed to the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR) for treatment, while authorities and emergency services responded promptly to the scene to provide assistance.
According to preliminary information, the victims were returning after attending a “Day of Repentance” program organized by the Mokokchung Town Ao Baptist Churches Mission (MTABCM), which was held on January 30 and 31 in Mokokchung town.
The accident is alleged to have occurred due to brake failure; however, official confirmation on the exact cause is awaited.
Further details regarding the identities of the deceased, the exact number of casualties, the condition of the injured, and the circumstances leading to the accident were not immediately available at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, according to Rev Puryapang, chairman of the MTABCM, more than 50 members of the Chümoukedima Ao Baptist Church attended the “Day of Repentance” program. He said the group was lodged at Artang Baptist Church, Mokokchung, during their stay.
Reacting to the tragic accident, Nagaland Rajya Sabha MP S Phangnon Konyak said she was devastated by the incident and the loss of precious lives, while expressing concern for those injured.
In a post on X, Konyak said she had spoken to the management of CIHSR, where the injured are undergoing treatment, and conveyed her concern. She also appreciated the doctors and staff of the hospital “for their yeoman service and for extending care with utmost priority.”
Expressing condolences, the MP said, “My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for eternal peace for the departed souls and a speedy recovery for all those injured.”
