The All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Sesame, School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, organised a one-day training programme on “Integrated Insect Pest and Disease Management of Sesame” at the Agriculture Office, Niuland, on September 12.
The programme was chaired by Block Technology Manager, Niuland, Demalu Hasnusa, and attended by 20 sesame-growing farmers from seven villages.
Scientist (Entomology) Dr Rokozeno explained the major insect pests and diseases affecting sesame and highlighted integrated management practices, with emphasis on cultural methods and organic pesticides. It was noted that unmanaged infestations can cause yield losses of 30 to 50 per cent and, in severe cases, up to 100 per cent.
Dr Debika Nongmaithem, Assistant Professor, Department of Agronomy, SAS, and Project In-charge, AICRP on Sesame, stressed the importance of scientific cultivation practices. She said proper soil and seed selection, sowing, weed management and crop care can improve productivity and market returns.
The training also highlighted seed treatment with biofertilizers and fungicides to protect crops and support healthy growth.
Agricultural inputs were distributed to participating farmers to encourage adoption of improved crop-management practices.
