A one-day awareness program on the socio-economic and environmental impact of the Jal Jeevan Mission and its sustainability: An Empirical Study in Nagaland was hosted at Tuensang Village Panchayat Hall on April 4, 2025.
The research is being conducted under the leadership of Project Director, Prof Ashutosh Tripathi, Head of the Department of Environmental Science, Nagaland University, Lumami, and Co-Project Director, Nohochem Sangtam, Assistant Professor at Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung; Professor Ambirish Singh from the Department of Chemistry, Nagaland University, and Dr.Ashutosh Tripathi, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Science, Nagaland University.
In the launching awareness program, Tripathi shared a short message on the research activities and said that the study is purely to assess the impact of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in Nagaland academically.
The study focuses on the socio-economic and environmental impacts of the mission along with its sustainability in the region. He shared that the scheme has impacted the different dimensions of the lives of people especially in Nagaland, and it is the time for the people and community to come together for the sustainability of the scheme.
Er Akangjongshi Chang JE, PHED, Tuensang division highlighted a brief information on the division activity on JJM. He thanked the research team, especially Professor Ashutosh Tripathi and his team for taking up the research project which will be helpful for the policy makers and society in the near future. In his speech, he also thanked Nohochem Sangtam, who actively worked in the Water Quality analysis under JJM activities from baseline survey to implementation process for the last few years.
Nohochem Sangtam, Co-Project Director & Assistant Professor, Department of EVS FAC, Mokokchung, talked on the research objective and areas of study to be focused on, and emphasized the importance of the research in understanding the long-term effects of JJM on local communities and the environment. He encouraged department officials and the community to take part in the positive notes on research activities especially during data collection whose findings will provide valuable insights for future planning and policy decisions in the future, ensuring that the mission’s benefits are sustained for generations to come. He also encouraged active participation and collaboration from local communities, government officials, and other stakeholders to ensure the success of the research. He stated that their field staff will be visiting at the village level for data collection and sample analysis.
The program began with a welcome address by Kaimang Chang, Citizen President and WATSAN Chairman, Tuensang Village, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Er Ngamen Chang, JE, PHED. The event was chaired by Changkiuba, Field Investigator, Nagaland University.
The launching event was attended by PHED officials, Junior Engineers (JEs), PhD scholars, WATSAN Council members, and women representatives.
