Days after the protest against one Dr Sentiwate Aier, faculty in the Department of Religion, Union Biblical Seminary (UBS) in Pune, who was accused of sexually and mentally harassing multiple female students of the Seminary on multiple occasions, the principal of the UBS, Dr Praveen informed that the accused had resigned from the campus.

“The accused has resigned from the campus. He has been taken off duty and he is no longer in the campus,” the principal told this newspaper, adding that the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) has been investigating the matter and that the report will come out accordingly.

Sources said that the accused resigned the previous night while the Board Chairman visited the campus and met with the students today. It was informed that the Board Chairman gave his word to the protestors that the ICC report will be out tomorrow (Thursday).

However, despite the accused’s resignation, the students said they are continuing to protest because ‘resignation is not enough’ and demanded that the accused and his family evacuate the college.

According to one of the students, they will continue their protest until their demands that the “accused and his family leave the campus to the point of never returning” are fulfilled.

In a letter to the administration, the students have alleged that the wife of the accused, Dr Watimongla Jamir (Female Hostel Warden, H.O.D Missiology), who is also a faculty has been going around the victims’ rooms trying to find out the names of the complainants to manipulate and intimidate the victims.

Meanwhile, in a notification dated 18 April, the Board Chairman of UBS, Rev Vijayesh Lal informed that “The spouse of the said faculty (accused) was also taken off duty to facilitate a smooth and impartial inquiry and to ward away any kind of aspersions of interference.”

The Chairman also informed that “following certain allegations in an anonymous email, the present Chair of the ICC recused herself from this inquiry and the UBS board appointed a new interim Chair of the ICC to look after this matter and take it forward.”

It was further informed that the board has asked the report to be tabled by Friday, 21 April 2023 latest, so that decision can be taken accordingly. The Chairman assured that the ICC will conduct the inquiry impartially and will take action based on the recommendation of the ICC as per the POSH Act.

“We are hopeful that the ICC report will do justice,” said a student.
