Upholding Article 371A of the Indian Constitution and standing together in the larger interest of the Nagas as their stated purpose, the three urban organizations – the Association of Kohima Municipal Ward Panchayat (AKMWP); All Ward Union Mokokchung Town (AWUMT); Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) – along with representatives from 23 other town organizations, on Tuesday, resolved not to participate nor allow any candidate to contest or file nominations for the Urban Local Body (ULB) elections if the government fail to review the Nagaland Municipal Act (NMA) 2001.

This decision was made during a meeting held at Hotel 2K, Kohima on 21 March 2023.

The meeting also resolved to strongly urge the Government of Nagaland to review the entire contents of the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001, its applicability, and usages according to the reality and practicability of the Naga people, before the conduct of the elections.

It also resolved not to allow any form of taxation on property i.e., tax on land and buildings, either in Municipals or Towns.

The three organizations – AKMWP, DUCCF and AWUMT – also submitted a memorandum to the Principal Secretary, Municipal Affairs Department this evening reiterating its earlier demand for deletion of all the words and sentences in regard with property tax i.e., “Tax on land and building.”

These decisions were made following the 18 March clarification issued by the government.
