The Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) through a statement called for “one person, one vote, and vote without influence” in the upcoming urban local body (ULB) elections in the state, scheduled for June 26.

“In this coming ULB elections let us exercise our franchise with dignity and pride to choose the right leader to represent us in our ward for the benefit of the community,” the NBCC said in an appeal to the voters.

Acknowledging that crooked elections have been a long-standing problem in Nagaland, the NBCC said it has given rise to the blame game and nasty party politics.

“By hook or crook in politics must be done away with. We must give space to God and the people to make the right choice based on capability and ability,” it said, adding, “If we want to see change, we must start at the grassroots level, and now is the time. As voters, we are frequently blamed at the end of the game, and we must accept the blame without recourse. If we are aware of our power, we can vote correctly with a single vote”.

Stating that voters have an equal responsibility to pray before casting their votes, the NBCC said, “We shouldn’t be influenced by speech alone. Whoever is concerned about the colony and can perform should be chosen to represent you. Commitment, dedication, and concern for the colony should be the standard”.

It added how selecting the best candidate for the colony in this ULB election is a privilege and urged every voter to avoid playing partisan politics and the blaming game.

“We must believe that all the candidates are capable people and it is our vote that will put the right and capable candidates to represent us to do things collectively for our benefits,” it added.

It also appealed to both the candidates and the voters to remember the heavenly gift bestowed upon them and act responsibly during the forthcoming ULB elections.

Saying that many people lack the gift of leadership, the NBCC said with the ULB elections approaching, it is the appropriate time for the candidates to demonstrate God-given leadership by being cognizant of the obligation to serve the community.
