ULB Select Committee approves 33% reservation for women but without reservation for Chairperson

Kohima, 6 November (MTNews): The Select Committee responsible for reviewing the Nagaland Municipal (Bill) 2023 has given the green light to a 33% reservation for women in the upcoming Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections. This decision was announced following a consultative meeting held at the Capital Convention Centre, Kohima on 6 November, a DIPR report said.

Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang, who serves as the Convenor of the Select Committee, shared key details during a press conference. He confirmed that the ULB elections will be held once the Nagaland Municipal (Bill) 2023 is passed.

He mentioned that the ULB elections will include a 33% reservation for women, but the reservation of the chairperson post for women in ULBs will be removed. Furthermore, he said, only indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland will be eligible to contest the ULB elections. Zeliang also highlighted that the provision for taxing land and properties will be eliminated.

The members of the Select Committee included Metsubo Jamir, Minister of Rural Development and SIRD; KG Kenye, Minister of Power and Parliamentary Affairs; and Zhaleo Rio, Advisor for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs.

Representatives from the Central Nagaland Tribes Council, Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization, and Tenyimi Union Nagaland attended the meeting. Chief Secretary J. Alam, IAS, was present as well.
