Inaugurated in September 2021, Highland Brew and Café is located at Tongdentsüyong Ward, Mokokchung where raw bean (medium roasted) coffee of Nagaland is served. It is managed and owned by Mr & Mrs Lanuakum Jamir of Ungma village who resides in Majakong ward with his family.
Lanu’s initial plan was to open an Indian dish restaurant until he stumbled upon the Land Resources Department Scheme (LRD scheme) whose vision is to promote coffee culture by following 3Es- employment, environment and economy. The scheme, therefore, involved opening coffee bars around Nagaland in pursuance of the state government’s effort to promote coffee.
Through this scheme, Lanu was offered with three months of Barista training in Kohima and a coffee vending machine with which he kick-started his journey.
Currently, the coffee beans he uses are mostly those grown in Mokokchung and Kohima.
“I buy the coffee seeds from various villages of Mokokchung and Kohima because I want my customers to taste coffees that are grown in Nagaland,” he said.
Sharing about his aspirations, he hopes to turn his café into a brand similar to those of Starbucks. However, he maintains that his sole focus would be in promoting the coffees of Nagaland.
“I do wish to turn my coffee bar into a brand of my own. I can’t say it will happen now but someday I’d love to branch out and establish myself better,” he concluded.
