Mokokchung, November 27 (MTNews): The Janata Dal (United) Nagaland on Sunday said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is the most dangerous threat to the democratic constitution of India and has expressed concern over the BJP deciding to implement UCC in Gujarat.

“The JDU, being a solemnly secular party, is extremely troubled to know that the BJP has decided to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Gujarat once it comes to power again,” the party said in a press release on Sunday. The JDU Nagaland said that this development is “only a beginning which will spread to the rest of the country.”

JDU Nagaland also said that the decision to implement UCC in Gujarat also means that the BJP has totally surrendered to the dictate of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and that the BJP is no more a political party but a religious organization under the whims and fancies of the RSS.

In this regard, JDU Nagaland said that the Naga people should be the most worried. “From time immemorial, the Nagas had lived a life of democracy deeply rooted in the village republic which was free from any external interference. As such, to live under a Uniform Civil Code conditioned by a dominant religious ethics of the majority will subjugate the Nagas’ age-old cultures and traditions,” JDU Nagaland cautioned.

JDU Nagaland also said that, over the years, the Nagas have embraced Christianity overwhelmingly and “this is also a very important factor when it comes to UCC.” Therefore, it said, the Naga people must wake up and defend themselves so that their history and identity is protected from any “external religiously riddled aggression.”
