Guwahati, 20 February (MTNews): In an attempt to bolster waterways infrastructure in the Northeast, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched a comprehensive plan worth Rs 308 crores to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth in the region.

At a ceremony held in Guwahati, Sonowal inaugurated several key projects, including the Passenger-cum-Cargo Terminal at Bogibeel near Dibrugarh and the Inland Water Transport Terminal at Sonamura in Tripura. Upgraded terminals at Karimganj and Badarpur in Assam were also launched.

Joined by dignitaries, including state ministers, MPs, and local officials, Sonowal emphasized the transformative potential of these projects. “These initiatives will not only boost trade and commerce but also pave the way for a prosperous Northeast,” he remarked.

The event also witnessed the laying of foundation stones for crucial infrastructure projects, including the Custom Immigration Office in Dhubri and capacity expansion at Jogighopa Terminal. Sonowal highlighted the strategic importance of these developments, aligning them with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed and connected Northeast.
Additionally, plans were announced for the deployment of 6 tourist jetties on the Brahmaputra and 2 Electric Hybrid Catamarans in Guwahati, along with the provision of 19 passenger vessels for NW2 & NW16.

The launching of these projects is part of the larger Sagarmala program, aimed at developing maritime infrastructure across the country. With the Northeastern states receiving special attention, projects exceeding Rs1,000 crores have been initiated to boost inland waterways and foster economic growth in the region, he said.

In line with the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways is prioritizing the expansion of port infrastructure and aims to increase the share of Inland Water Transport to 5% of total transportation by 2030.
