Polling for Urban Local Bodies Elections concluded with a tentative voter turnout of 83%, marking the first-ever municipal elections in the state with 33% reservation for women. The voting took place in 420 polling stations across 214 wards, with 523 candidates in contention. The voting commenced at 7:30 AM and concluded at 4:00 PM using the ballot paper voting system. The State Election Commission has announced that any necessary repolls will occur on 28th June. The counting of votes and declaration of results are scheduled for 29th June, starting at 8:00 AM.
Despite disruptions reported at a few polling stations, the Urban Local Bodies elections proceeded peacefully at many locations. The election in Phek Town Council was congenial across all 11 wards of the district headquarters, with no untoward incidents reported. In Mangkolemba, residents actively participated in the town council elections, achieving a high voter turnout of 94.77%. The election covered 6 polling stations representing 8 wards, resulting in a total of 2,413 votes cast.
Elsewhere, voting in Peren District was conducted peacefully. Chumoukedima Town Council’s polling day also proceeded smoothly, with a total of 16,127 electors turning out to cast their votes, including 7,815 males and 8,312 females.
75.36% voter participation in Kohima Municipal Council elections 2024
The Kohima Municipal Council elections, held on 26th June 2024, witnessed a significant voter turnout, with an overall 75.36% of the total eligible voters. Out of the 42,178 registered voters, a total of 31,784 votes and 101 votes from election duty voters were cast across the 14 Wards that went to the polls in Kohima.
Ward 16, comprising NMH/Lerie/NST/Dairy Farm, recorded the highest number of votes cast, with 4,737 votes. In contrast, Daklane Ward witnessed the lowest number of votes cast, with 986 ballots.
In terms of voter turnout percentage, Naga Bazaar led with 86.10%, while NMH/Lerie/NST/Dairy Farm Ward recorded the lowest turnout percentage, with 68.59%.
After the completion of the KMC election process, the Ballot Box Strong Room was sealed in the presence of the RO and ARO of Kohima Municipal Council, DC Kohima, and political parties at the DC Office Complex, Kohima, on 26th June 2024.
Mangkolemba Town Council elections 2024 see 94.77% voter turnout
The residents of Mangkolemba actively participated in the town council elections of 2024, with a high voter turnout of 94.77%. The election took place across six polling stations representing eight wards in the town, with a total of 2,413 votes cast. After the polling was completed, the Election Observer, Returning Officer, Assistant Returning Officer, Sector Magistrate, and the polling officials left for Mokokchung town. The counting of votes will be held at the town council hall in Mokokchung on 29th June 2024 (Saturday).
Dimapur
The Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections in Dimapur were held on 26th June 2024, covering a total of 23 wards with 118 polling stations from the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) and 7 wards with 11 polling stations from the East Dimapur Town Council (EDTC). The elections commenced at 7:30 AM and witnessed significant voter turnout across various polling stations.
The DMC has 60,281 registered voters, while the EDTC has 10,245 voters. Voters came out in large numbers to exercise their democratic rights, ensuring a vibrant and participatory election process.
It is to be noted that two candidates from the Dimapur Municipal Council and four candidates from the East Dimapur Town Council were elected uncontested.
Observers for the elections, Arenla Jamir for the DMC and Imsongmeren for the EDTC, were at the polling stations to oversee the smooth conduct of the election process.
Chumoukedima
Chumoukedima Town Council polling day was carried out peacefully, with no untoward incidents reported across all 24 polling stations under 11 wards on 26th June 2024. Despite hot weather conditions, voters showed unwavering enthusiasm, patiently queuing up to cast their votes in Chumoukedima town. A total of 16,127 electors turned out to vote, comprising 7,815 males and 8,312 females. Security personnel were stationed at all polling stations to ensure a smooth electoral process. Each polling station was equipped with standard voting compartments and provided with refreshments and necessary facilities for the convenience of voters.
Peren
Voting proceeded peacefully across Peren District from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM on 26th June 2024, with no untoward incidents reported at any polling station.
A large number of electors turned out to exercise their universal adult franchise, resulting in long queues at most polling stations.
Meanwhile, the District Administration, accompanied by police personnel, inspected polling stations to ensure that the voting process was conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner.
Phek
The election to Phek Town Council was conducted peacefully in all 11 wards of the district headquarters on 26th June 2024, without any untoward incidents reported from any quarter. Electors conscientiously participated in the elections by exercising their franchise.
