An MSc student from the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has successfully developed and evaluated a herbal shampoo using indigenous plant species sourced from the university’s campus.

USTM student develops herbal shampoo using indigenous plants
Nayan Teron, a 4th-semester postgraduate student from the Department of Botany, carried out the research under the guidance of Dr. Mautushi Das, Associate Professor in the department. The project focused on exploring the therapeutic potential of local herbaceous plants traditionally known for promoting hair health.

As part of the research, Teron conducted a systematic survey of herbaceous plant diversity across different ecological zones of the USTM campus. Based on ethnobotanical knowledge and literature review, several plants with known hair-nourishing and conditioning properties were selected for formulation.

The shampoo was developed using eco-friendly and scientifically validated methods, and underwent a series of rigorous tests to assess its performance and safety. These included: pH determination; Solid content analysis; Foaming index and stability tests; Foam ability assessment; and Dirt dispersion test.

Results showed that the herbal shampoo maintained a well-balanced pH, exhibited excellent foaming capacity and stability, and demonstrated effective cleansing properties. It was also noted to be potentially effective in addressing hair fall and dandruff.

“This research spotlights the therapeutic potential of local herbaceous plants and highlights the botanical wealth of the USTM campus. It reinforces the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya’s role as a vibrant hub of biodiversity and a source of eco-friendly innovations rooted in traditional knowledge and scientific inquiry,” an update received here from the University stated.
