The Voluntary Blood Donors Association Nagaland (VBDAN), in collaboration with the Blood Centre, Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK), and the Indian Red Cross Society, observed National Voluntary Blood Donation Day at the CRPF Camp, Zubza. The program was held under the theme “Give Blood, Give Hope: Together We Save Lives.”
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Avila Sangtam, M.D. Transfusion Medicine, NHAK, emphasized the importance of blood donation, noting that “someone, somewhere needs blood, whether it’s a sick baby, a bleeding patient, or a person suffering from cancer.” She explained that red cells have a shelf life of 35 to 42 days, while platelets last only 5 days. Dr. Avila highlighted that male donors must observe a mandatory 3-month gap between donations, while female donors require 4 months. She further stressed that blood donation benefits donors through a mini health check-up, which includes blood pressure, hemoglobin, and screening for infections such as HIV, Hepatitis, and Malaria. “After donating blood, donors experience a sense of peace, knowing that they have helped save someone’s life,” she said.
On behalf of the 78 Battalion CRPF, Medical Officer Dr. T.Y. Singh welcomed participants and described blood donation as “the greatest service to humanity,” adding that a few minutes of effort can give someone a new life. He also commended CRPF personnel for serving the nation and contributing to saving lives.
Dr. Sangita Mary Rajah, Chief Medical Officer (SG) and Commandant, delivered motivational remarks on the significance of voluntary blood donation. The event saw 21 CRPF personnel donating blood, showcasing their selfless commitment.
The program, chaired by Vincent Yhome, Technical Supervisor, NHAK, concluded with a pledge led by S.H.R.V. Philip, 2nd-in-Command, 78th Battalion CRPF, where participants vowed to promote blood donation.
