The 17th edition of the Hornbill International Naga Wrestling Championship 2024 was held at Chiechama, Kohima, on 6 December 2024, with Jigme Thinley Namgyal, Consul General of the Royal Bhutanese Consulate General in Guwahati, Kingdom of Bhutan, as the special guest.
27-year-old Venuzo Dawhuo emerged as the champion of the 17th Hornbill International Naga Wrestling Championship 2024, held today at Chiechama in Kohima district as part of the 25th edition of the Hornbill Festival. This victory marked a significant milestone for Dawhuo, who had already won two NWA titles and three open wrestling titles. On his journey to the final, Dawhuo defeated Rukukhoto Khesoh in the quarterfinals, overcame reigning NWA champion Kezhaseluo Pienyu in the semifinals, and bested Venu Vadeo in the final to claim the coveted title.
Dawhuo, hailing from Thenyizu Village in Phek District, took home a cash prize of Rs 70,000. The runner-up, 18-year-old Vadeo from Runguzu Village, received Rs 50,000. Kezhaseluo Pienyu and Vemele Thingo, who shared third place, were awarded Rs 10,000 each. In the 90 kg and below category, Seyiejalie Gwirie emerged as the champion, while Thuputha Hesuh secured the runner-up position. For the 75 kg and below category, Keneiselie Khawakhrie claimed the championship title, with Rokuokehie Khawakhrie finishing as the runner-up. Winners in both categories received cash prizes of Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000, respectively.
The event saw participation from 50 wrestlers representing eight Naga tribes: Angami, Chakhesang, Zeliang, Lotha, Sumi, Pochury, Rengma, and Ao. This year’s championship also featured a special exhibition match for women, with 10 participants showcasing their skills. Adding to the excitement, a Wild Card Entry was granted to the winner of the 1st ANCSU Wrestling Meet 2024, introducing a fresh dynamic to the competition.
For the first time, an exhibition match was held in the women’s category, featuring the 65 kg and below and 65 kg and above weight classes at the Hornbill International Naga Wrestling.
Earlier, in his opening remarks, Namgyal acknowledged the State Government for facilitating their visit and giving them the opportunity to witness the 17th Hornbill International Naga Wrestling Championship 2024. He expressed that this festival was particularly special for them because it allowed them to see and experience the 18 major Naga tribes, each unique in its own right, along with their colorful attires, all inspired by nature, and their rich musical culture.
