Mokokchung, 17 July (MTNews): The Village Guard Association of Nagaland (VGAN) has declared a strike to be held on 27 and 28 July 2023 from 6:00 am to 5:00 pm in their respective districts. As part of the strike, the Village Guards will lay down their arms and refrain from performing their duties during the designated hours.
The VGAN has appealed to the state government to address their demands, primarily related to salary. They are requesting an increase in their monthly salary from the current amount of 3000 rupees, as well as a daily allowance of 25 rupees.
Furthermore, the VGAN has also urged the State Government to release the matured Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) payout, which was initiated in 2007.
Expressing disappointment, the VGAN responded to CL John’s statement, who stated that Village Guards are “not a department but an organization.” The VGAN argued that the existence of officers, chowkidars, and commandants within their ranks indicates their status as a department. Moreover, they questioned the presence of a minister for the Village Guard if they are not recognized as a department.
Highlighting additional inconsistencies, the VGAN emphasized their participation in the Pension Information Management System (PIMS) and receiving pensions, which they believe further validates their status as a department.
In conclusion, the VGAN expressed hope that the government would engage in negotiations to address their concerns, thus avoiding the need for further agitation. They remain committed to their duties and expect a constructive dialogue with the state authorities to find a resolution that satisfies their demands.
The VGAN also explained their roles and responsibilities as Village Guards. According to the President and the General Secretary of the VGAN, the roles and responsibilities of VGAN involves providing security along the international border; Rendering guard of honors to Ministers and the President during official visits; Serving as the Road Opening Party (ROP) when MLAs and Ministers travel.
The ROP is responsible for patrolling and clearing roads of any potential threats; and assisting the Army in guiding them to the international border and during insurgency situations.
